I’m still on the quest to figure out how the MHL and OTG can co-exist; this is what I come up with so far, it was just an idea. … i think if i could connected two mhl cables it might work, since it satisfies the requirements… for (1) power IN, (2) HDMI out, (3) S3 microUSB in and (4)OTG IN
what do you think?
Since the MHL’s MicroUSB IN is for mainly for power, however it also transfers data, hence hdmi output. Now you would say “if it also transfers data, why not just plug the otg directly into it,” right?
Which brings us back to out original thoughts on this in the beginning. But the solution seems too simple, and if no one else had thought of this, they might have mentioned it, and yet mostly likely someone else had already tried it and they have not gotten it to work, so Back to Square One with the SG S3.
Sometimes simple solutions are the best, on seconds thought and review, i think it’s not going to work… after all!
Because… no matter how many mhl’s there are… it will not result in an extra MicroUSB out for the USB OTG, because it will always be for the power source
So here’s the problem… the Samsung SIII uses a special 11-Pin micro USB input, and while it’s possible to connect to a HDMI screen via the Samsung Galaxy S3 MHL/HDMI Adaptor (definitions: Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) / HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)), it seems we cannot connect our OTG (definitions: USB On-The-Go), because there needs to be an extra input/output (microUSB) port in order to plug it in… so began the quest of a friend of mine & me to find a solution!
Here’s what we found….
Samsung Galaxy S® III uses an 11-pin micro USB input, which allows it to support MHL output and USB on-the-go input simultaneously – an improvement over 5-pin capability. This means that customers can take advantage of new functions for accessories that are not supported by a 5-pin micro USB connector, allowing a deeper convergence between the Galaxy S III smartphone and a HDTV.
To ease this transition and to allow for greater innovation with Samsung accessories, Samsung Mobile will offer a 5-pin to 11-pin MHL Cable Adapter that will allow the original Samsung HDTV Smart Adapter to function properly with U.S. models of the Galaxy S III, as well as future Samsung premium smartphones. In addition, Samsung is offering consumers the ability to purchase the new adapter separately, or to bundle it with the original HDTV Smart Adapter. Our goal in offering these MHL adapter solutions is to provide consumers with the newest accessory technology while ensuring the highest level of device compatibility.

OTG+MHL? Maybe (anyone taken an MHL adapter (or 11pin to 5pin converter) apart yet?)
“Thinking about ordering this 11 pin MHL cable off ebay (ebay com/ itm/ Sam-sung-Galaxy-S3-SIII-i9300-MHL-Micro-USB-11pin-HDTV-HDMI-male-Adapter/…….) to do some testing with or at least find out if that USB port has more than just the power wires connected (the pins are there on the USB connector if you look at the close up but who knows if they’re attached through the HDMI part and all the way to the MHL adapter).”
